Behind the Shades - Huatulco, Mexico: An Honest Take | Struck by Travel

Huatulco Is Overhyped.
And Still Worth Every Minute.

Picture this: You're standing on a pristine beach, warm sand between your toes, gazing out at the crystal-clear Pacific. The scent of salt and tropical flowers fills the air. Welcome to Huatulco, Mexico's not-so-secret slice of paradise!

A Trip Five Years in the Making

Our Huatulco adventure was set for March 2020. Sun hats packed, sunscreen ready, and then... BAM! Covid hit like a rogue wave. Fast forward to 2025, and we finally made it. Different crew, same burning desire to explore those legendary nine bays. And let me tell you, it was worth the wait!

Pirate Tales and Wooden gods

Before we dive into the turquoise waters, let's talk history. Huatulco, originally "Cuahtolco," means "the place where wood is worshipped." Legend has it that a bearded dude once floated in on a cross, making everyone think Quetzalcoatl was back in town. Talk about a dramatic entrance!

Then came the pirates! Francis Drake, Thomas Cavendish – these guys were the rockstars of the high seas. I like to imagine them with parrot sidekicks and eye patches, though I'm sure it was less "Pirates of the Caribbean" and more "slightly less glamorous scurvy."

The Bay Adventure (Minus the Boat)

One of the many beaches found at the nine bays

Our first mission? Explore those nine bays! We had visions of a sleek boat, wind in our hair, snorkeling gear at the ready. But then, one of our crew had a sudden, intense aversion to the open sea. Think teenager at a horror movie, but with more sunscreen. So, land tour it was!

Our air-conditioned van was a lifesaver. We saw all the bays, got the lowdown from our guide, and even spotted a whale from the lighthouse! But let's be honest, we missed out on the snorkeling at Chachacual Bay. Everyone raves about it – like swimming in a giant, colorful aquarium. Next time, for sure!

La Crucecita: Tacos, Murals, and Tourist Trinkets

Recently painted ceiling mural in the church

La Crucecita, the heart of Huatulco, is where the magic happens. Picture a charming town square, kids laughing, music playing, and the smell of sizzling tacos. We grabbed some street tacos – seriously, the best I've ever had – and just soaked it all in.

Don't miss the Church of La Crucecita with its massive, electric-blue mural of the Virgin of Guadalupe. It's 65 feet of pure, quirky awesomeness. And, of course, being tourists, we hit up the local bazaar for those obligatory "I went to Mexico" souvenirs.

Off the Beaten Path

We managed to sneak in a few off-the-beaten-path adventures. Huatulco National Park was a must, but we missed some other hidden gems. I heard whispers of Copalita Eco-Archaeological Park, with its ancient temples and ball court. Sounds like something straight out of an Indiana Jones movie, minus the snakes (hopefully).

And Hagia Sofia Ecological Park? Exotic trees, fresh fruit, zip-lining – yes, please! Next time, I'm ditching the group and going full explorer.

Sunrises, Seafood, and Slang Lessons

One morning, we dragged ourselves out of bed for a sunrise on the beach. The sky turned all pink and orange, birds took flight, and I felt like I was in a travel commercial.

Then there's the food. Oh, the food! Fresh ceviche, Oaxacan mole (that mole negro with the smoky, licorice-y flavor? Mind-blowing!). I even attempted to learn some Spanish slang. Apparently, "gacho" means "bad/mean," which is good to know if you accidentally order the wrong taco.

Tips for Your Huatulco Adventure

This is probably the single most valuable piece of information in this entire article:

  • Boat or Land? If you're not afraid of the open water, take the boat tour of the bays.
  • Embrace the Markets: The local mercados are where you'll find the best deals and the most authentic experiences.
  • Mole, Mole, Mole: eriously, try the mole. Your taste buds will thank you.
  • Learn a Little Spanish: Even a few phrases can go a long way.
  • Pesos are Your Friend: While some places take dollars, you'll get a better deal with pesos.
  • Explore Beyond the Beaches: Huatulco has so much more to offer than just sand and sea.

"As our trip came to an end, we were already planning our return. Huatulco has that effect on you. It's a place where you can relax, explore, and maybe even face your fear of boats (or not). So, pack your bags, grab your sense of adventure, and get ready to fall in love with Huatulco. Just maybe take a Dramamine, just in case."

Picture this: it's just after sunset on the top deck of the AmaPrima. A medieval castle is sliding past us on the right bank, lit up like a postcard. There's a live duo playing somewhere below us. The captain — the actual captain — is six feet away from me in shorts, mixing me my third lemon drop of the evening. And I am slowly arriving at the conclusion that this man is moonlighting as our bartender.

Her Spanish is genuinely good. The vending machine, however, is not.
